Its purpose is to place a cost on the embedded emissions of certain goods produced outside the European Union, helping to prevent the relocation of carbon-intensive production to countries with less stringent climate policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"872\"><span class=\"font-168268\">The mechanism initially covers six sectors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"956\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1pra0q1\" data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"891\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">iron and steel;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6yzx74\" data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"904\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">aluminium;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ajyj7r\" data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"914\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">cement;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ku04kt\" data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"929\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">fertilisers;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1o2tc7o\" data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"944\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">electricity;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1w8rxfm\" data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"956\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">hydrogen.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"1199\"><strong><span class=\"font-168268\">The application of CBAM depends on the customs classification of the goods and their corresponding Combined Nomenclature (CN) code.
